Untitled-1ALASKA RAILROAD HO BOXCARS

At the end of WWII this government owned line contracted with the Chicago Freight Car Co. to rebuild a fleet of US Army Troop Sleepers into fifty foot boxcars. These cars were often found in the “lower 48” and Canada as they ran in interchange service. Other roads made express boxcar conversions (found on the Passenger Car page) but only Alaska had regular freight service conversion cars, some 400 of them in the 10,000 and 15000 number series. They carried at least three lettering schemes in their many decades of service. As rail technology progressed the Alaska undertook converting some of these cars into high cube boxcars!  Boxcars with rusted roofs found their upper portions torched off while others with lower back “infirmaties”  donated upper halves. The two car bodies portions were splice welded to a taller configuration, as were car doors and ends. These high cubes were also interchanged but unpopular with the crews who hauled down to the ferry. They were easily toppled in the windy canyon. [Interesting sidenote: Unrostered mystery ex-troop sleeper gondolas were employed hauling the scrap iron to recycle, gon and all].  We’ve double etched the carsides, ends and doors of both varieties in brass that applies to an injection molded styrene roof and floor. Styrene and etched brass details complete the car. “Bettendorf” trucks are appropriate. (Pre production models shown)

PENNSYLVANIA RR  65ft MILL GONDOLA Class G26

The Pennsy built 1650 of these long 2200 series cars in 1930-31– an era when PRR cars were found in most any US freight train.  Several hundreds of them served later on the Penn Central and some even ran in Conrail service. The Lehigh Valley purchased 50 G26 cars from the PRR as well. Mill Gondolas are used to carry extra length products (pipe, beams, trusses, bridges etc.) from steel mills and fabricators.  The loads could protrude beyond the drop ends if “buffer” flat cars were at each end.  Wind turbine blades are currently shipped similarly –overhanging  their 86 foot flat cars.  Originally available from E&B Valley/Eastern Car Works, this injection molded styrene HO kit is undecorated and limited edition.

THRALL ALL DOOR BOXCAR

Thrall delivered fifty all door boxcars to the US Plywood company in 1967 after a company (McCloud River RR) official sketched the idea on a paper napkin while accepting two new cabooses [cabeese, cabin cars or whatever they are on the MR]. Regular boxcars were difficult for plywood  loading and unloading, yet the plywood needed shelter flat cars didn’t provide. An Additional fifty cars soon followed from the Southern Iron Works. The first group were randomly numbered in the 1400 and 1600 series while the second were in the 1000 and 1200 series. The cars wore a variety of colorful hues in their short career but fell from favor in the mid 1970’s as load protection for plywood loading on center beam flatcars became refined and car maintenance headaches for eight sliding bypass doors (per car) increased.  The 94 remaining cars were sold to the McCloud River Railroad which converted many to  “regular” boxcars, replacing the outermost two doors on each side with outside post flat steel  siding.  These cars were commonly seen through the decade of the 70’s. Some were cut down to serve as maintenance service flats and all were scrapped from the 1980’s through 2005. All, that is, except MR #1236 residing at the Western Pacific Museum, Portola, CA.  Other firms and roads including Ashley Drew & Northern had Thrall design cars built as late as the 1970s. The Signature Series kit features an injection molded styrene body as introduced by E&B Valley, snap in floor and snap in end ladders.

#197-2201 Thrall All Door Boxcar    $8.95

Untitled-1BALTIMORE and OHIO

M53 Wagontop Boxcar

In the late 1930s the B&O introduced a revolutionary boxcar design that overcame many weaknesses in traditional design, decreased cost and became a “trademark” of the road. Built in company shops, the wagontop wrapped a single piece of steel from the roof centerline to the floor so successfully that their covered hoppers and cabooses followed the concept. A half century later the wagontops began disappearing. Though seen from coast to coast, the design was not copied by other lines.

This kit is based upon an injection molded shell and double etched brass ends; “as built” doors and tracks; and both brass and styrene details. In this manner we have correctly duplicated the unique roof walk supports and door tracks as well as other technically difficult [to produce] details. The B&O created variations (subclasses, retrofits, and predecessors) of the design which are readily duplicated because of our kit’s design.

Untitled-1RAILWAY EXPRESS REFRIGERATOR

Converted troop Sleeper

Chicago Freight Car converted three hundred insulated troop sleepers into express refrigerator cars that ran all across North America in freight and passenger service as Railway Express REA #6600-6874 and KCS cars as CRDX #1001-1025. After REA was dissolved many cars saw service for other rail and private shippers. Best known are the bright yellow Kraft Foods cars. This kit (the only kit ever offered for this ubiquitous car) is based on an injection molded styrene core with double etched brass sides, ends and details and injection molded roof walk and ice hatches that can be opened. Allied trucks were not used– “Bettendorf” style are recommended as are two AB brake sets (not included on kit). Assembled cars decorated for REA are listed on the PASSENGER CAR page.  Custom built (by Grand River Shops in Canada) REA car is shown

 cannonballlogo blue webCONVERTED TROOP SLEEPERS

animated gif      CAMP CARS

Maintenance of  Way crews, survey crews, bridge & building crews, wreck train crews— many railroad employees must “ live at the job.” Outdated passenger cars are often found in this service.  After WW II, however, surplus troop cars were purchased by some 100 US railroads for conversion to various service tasks and camp cars were the most common. Unlike the revenue conversions on the passenger car page, these cars usually stayed on the original Allied trucks—they were not in interchange. Phase 1 sleepers (with stairwell) were often used as camp cars  (they were not considered structurally sound for the express car service conversions).

Pile Driver (HO)

At the time Red Ball was purchased from MRRW a revised edition of the earlier (and sought after) Pile Driver kit was being developed. The decision was reached that MRRW would market one last Red Ball branded kit made in Roanoke- a retooled Pile Driver- as a limited edition 75th Anniversary kit. Reservations are being accepted. Only 75 kits will be produced with a mix of wood, resin, cast metal, etched brass and injection molded styrene parts.

Cannonball Car Shops
injection molded HO styrene kits are undecorated, let trucks and coupler unless otherwise specified. Cannonball was born when we began producing Red Ball in the mid 1970s since that line was composed of wood bodies with die cast metal parts. We engineered use of the Red Ball molds to also make styrene parts and the name was to distinguish which materials composed the kit.  Additional new tooling was created and the historic Kurtz Kraft PS1 boxcar molds were purchased from Alexander and the line became more than just “plastic Red Ball.”

This kit was THE FIRST HO all plastic scale model kit when Kurtz Kraft introduced it in 1950?  It had this misfortune of timing-just weeks before Irv Athearn released his “shake the box” plastic boxcar.  The Pullman Standard 40 ft PS1 was purchased by some six dozen railroads with a choice of 6, 7 or 8 foot doors. The kit has 7’.  The mold group also included welded refrigerator car sides, dreadnaught reefer ends and a reefer detailed hatch. MRRW cut additional molds for wooden reefer and boxcar sides that matched the reefer ends. All are long since out of production. Limited quantities of PS1 boxcar and refrigerator car kits are available. We can also supply a range of undecorated parts and defective PS1 styrene kits (the molded sides have broken stirrup steps) while the supplies last they are in the Yardsale.

Shortly after introducing the PS1 plastic kit, Kurtz Kraft released a welded steel sided reefer kit with dreadnaught steel ends. The ice hatches can be installed closed or open, and highly detailed hinges, latch bar, ladders are all separate parts.  This kit was re-released by Cannonball CAR Shops in the late 1980s and we also made a mold for a (styrene) wood side for this kit. The wood sided kit can also be built as a low profile boxcar by adding doors and door guides (see below & YARDSALE page for addl. Parts). Long unavailable, both of these reefers are being released in December 2014 as a limited edition. L/TKS, CPLRS

Early in the era of “Auto Racks” the prototype roads purchased conversion kits to add to the TTX and other long flats. Dana, an automotive parts supplier to the industry, was a pioneer in offering these conversion kits and Cannonball was a pioneer too. Our two and three level racks were the only plastic kits (Quality Craft made wood kits) auto hauling available for many years. Our racks were to fit Athearn (the only plastic TTX flats then made) cars. Three level is shown but we can still supply the two level Dana Rack. Includes side racks, decks and ladders – state of the 1980s art.

Twenty five thousand cars by over a dozen builders for over twenty roads across the USA—the objective of the USRA during WW I. These cars were still common in the 1950s. Rebuilt with steel sides they rain into the 1970s. Some were outside braced, other RRs used a “Youngstown rebuild kit” (starting 1938).With roof hatches and bottom hoppers added ,in 1934 the B&O and D&H made “Cement Car” conversions. (D&H #170012-17500- just 30 cars)(B&O #297000-287039)In 1921 the CPR built clones with 7/8 ends (rather than USRA 5/5/5).

293-4027

USRA 50T  TWO BAY HOPPER CAR

Twenty two thousand steel cars were ordered for 23 railroads!  These were common into the 1970s as the ARA had adopted them as standard in 1923- after WW I and USRA control.  Chemicals in coal are away the steel and many cars were patched in time- or received distinctive (bulged) panel sides for replacement (and greater hauling volume). Some ARA versions received peaked tops as early “covered hoppers” once marketed by Varney. In 1961, the Anderson’s, a large Midwestern grain company based outside Toledo, OH purchased 114 panel resided hoppers and fitted them with canvas covers—they ran until 1983 as #131-244.

293-4012                   WOOD ORE CARS 22ft  (2 cars per kit)

As Great Lakes ore cars, they were replaced by steel cars long before they disappeared.  Sand and gravel haulers loved them. You will too —   a thirty minute assembly to enjoy learning the joy of kit building. Check out the 12 car (6 kit pack) promo at bottom of this page. It would be a complete 40 inch train!

#293-4012       Wood Ore Car-two car kit                $14.50

293-4020SINGLE DOME TANK CAR

The USRA called for 54” domes for these mobile pipe liners, but 60” became the “standard” in short order.  Before super tankers- and while U Boats swarmed coastal waters- these were critical items. And history seems to have begun repeating itself with some modernization today. Optional manhole covers are included.

FREIGHT CAR, TENDER AND CABOOSE  TRUCKS

MRRW stocks the wide variety (100 different at last count) HO trucks shown –from quality US manufacturers Tahoe, Tichy and Bethlehem Car Works.  BCW KitBits trucks are assembled from detailed with soft metal sideframes. Most were the historic and extensive Red Ball truck line.  Tichy trucks are kits with detailed plastic side frames and molded Delrin ® wheels (preassembled on axles) . Tahoe are recently tooled special duty freight trucks, assembled  with acetyl plastic side frames and nonmagnetic metal  wheels (choose either RP25 or semi scale ).  East Gary Car trucks for larger scales use soft metal frames with steel wheels and are assembled. We (and the EGC firm) stock small quantities so they are sometimes out of stock and “special order” status. Due to their weight shipping is typically higher than minimum.

All Tahoe Trucks are $8.35 a pair. 100 series are to NMRA RP25 standards and 200 series are “semi scale” with .088” tread.

TAHOE TRUCKS are “state of the art” injection molded acetyl plastic with your choice of “traditional RP25” (catalog numbers in 100 series) or “semi scale .088in” (catalog numbers in 200 series) HO non-magnetic metal wheels. Separate brake shoe detail is installed. They include prototypes not available in the Bethlehem Car Kitbits and Tichy lines found on those pages of our website. All the quality trucks we carry are made inUSA. Tahoe HO trucks are $8.35 a pair.

50  TON DALMAN 2 LEVEL TRUCKS

Many freight cars built in the 1920s were equipped with Dalman trucks.  The Dalman 2 Level truck design used additional springs to give a smoother ride.  Railroads using this version included C&O, CGW, ITC, L&N, MILW, M-K-T, NC&StL, PM and many Texaco10,000 gallontank cars.

50 TON DALMAN 2 LEVEL TRUCKS

WITH LATERAL MOTION DETAIL

Dalman 2 Level trucks could also be equipped with the Barber Lateral Motion Device.  This feature used steel rollers and a roller seat between the springs and bolster to provide a little side-to-side movement of the car body to the track, reducing wear to wheel flanges, journals and couplers. Railroads using these trucks included ATSF, CN, CP, CNJ, CB&Q, CNW, IC, MP (and subsidiaries I-GN and StLB&M), NP, RI,  and SP.

 DOUBLE TRUSS AAR 50-TON TRUCKS

“Self-Aligning Spring-Plankless Double Truss Truck” is the full name for this truck design.  Introduced in early 1936, it quickly became popular for new freight cars built up into the mid 1940s.  The Double Truss feature strengthened the spring seat area, allowing room for more springs.

TMW-108

TMW-208

 COIL-ELLIPTIC 50-TON TRUCKS

“Coil-Elliptic” trucks added leaf springs to provide a smoother ride.  Double Truss trucks with this spring package were manufactured from the early 1930s to the late 1940s.  Railroads that used these trucks on some cars included BAR, C&O, CGW, D&M, DT&I, Erie, LNE, LS&I, MRS, N&W, NP, TA&G, VGN and WM, and some AC&F tanks cars built in 1937.  A similar 70-ton version was used by B&M, CNJ, CRP, D&H, DT&I,Erie, LNE, MEC and PRR.

 BARBER LATERAL MOTION 50-TON TRUCKS

The Barber Lateral Motion device used steel rollers and a roller seat between the bolster and springs to provide a little side-to-side movement of the car body to the track, resulting in a smoother ride.  U-section trucks with this feature were manufactured from the early 1920s to the late 1930s.  Railroads that used this style of truck included ATSF, B&O, CB&Q, CN, CP, CV, CofG, C&NW, C&EI, ERIE, DL&W, GTW, IC, MP, NP, RI, SL-SF, SP, T&NO, T&P, UP, and WP.  Also PFE and SFRD.

 70-TON  A-3  TRUCKS

American Steel Foundries’ A-3 Ride Control truck was arguably the most successful design ever.  Plain bearing versions were manufactured from the mid 1940s to the mid 1960s.  The 70-ton trucks featured a 5’-8” wheel base and 6” X 11” journals.

Examples of 70-ton capacity cars built during this era were 3-bay hoppers, 2 and 3-bay covered hoppers, mill gons and some flat cars.

Railroads that bought this truck included:  AA, ACL, ATSF, B&M, B&O, C&EI, C&O, CofG, CB&Q, CGW, CNJ, CNW, CRR, D&H, D&RGW, DL&W, DT&I, EJ&E, Erie, GM&O, GN, IC, KCS, L&N, LV, Monon, M&StL, MEC, MILW, MKT, MP, N&W, NC&StL, NH, NKP, NP, NYC, P&LE, PFE, PM, PRR, RI, SAL, SL-SF, SOO, SP, SP&S, SSW, T&NO, T&P, UP, Wabash, WM and WP.

 5’ Wheelbase Arch Bar Trucks

Back in the late 1800’s, this kind of truck was known as a Rigid Diamond Freight-car Truck. This one was built for the Union Tank Line and drawings of it were published in the 1895 Car Builder’s Dictionary.  Prototype features included a five-foot wheelbase, 20-ton capacity journals and brake shoes that were hung from the truck.

All our trucks feature one-piece black acetal plastic moldings with separate brake shoe detail, and non-magnetic, insulated metal RP-25 contour wheelsets. Trucks are also available with “semi-scale” (.088” wide) wheels.

WE RECEIVED A NOTICE OF PRICE INCREASES ON ETCHED BRASS  FROM OUR CONTRACTOR IN CALIFORNIA  JAN 11, 2013. THERE HAVE BEEN TWO PREVIOUS ETCHING INCREASES (as well as freight from CA) DURING 2012. WE ABSORBED THE FIRST AND MADE NOMINAL INCREASES ON A HANDFUL OF KITS WITH THE SECOND. PRICES ON ADVANCED RESERVATIONS ARE GUARANTEED. WE  EXPECT MANY KITS TO INCREASE IN  FEB-MARCH 2013.

“There will be a price increase coming, just as soon as I can shake the accounting mountain I am working on.  Existing prices will apply to the orders we have on hand, but there will be little to no notice once I get new pricing calculated.  We have had several supplier price increases in the past 24 months or so since I reviewed pricing last.  Other pricing pressures have been mounting especially related to several recent regulatory changes.  Some of these changes we are not only experiencing directly, but each of our suppliers have had similar impacts that are affecting the prices we pay them.  It is a sad circumstance that government officials don’t seem to understand, but this impact is a growing factor in manufacturing life.  Sorry to be the messenger.”
