STEWART HOBBIES update October 19, 2004

We have enjoyed decades of a great business relationship and personal friendship with Steve Stewart since the earliest days of his RS3 kits and Kato F units. The sale of the locomotive and hopper car line Steve, his late wife and their hard working crew brought to model railroaders is, in many ways welcome news in this turbulent time for the hobby business.  We wish Steve a well deserved  new career enjoying retirement. Today's expectation that diesel models will be specifically modeled to prototypical  "phases" and other major details can, in our opinion, be credited to Steve Stewart. This awareness now spills over into many areas of equipment expectation.  Bowser is a stable, quality and value oriented force in the model railroad business. Their stewardship of the Stewart Hobbies creations should bode well for those who prefer consistent availability, interesting variety of road names and quality American models backed with parts availability. We believe a great big "thanks" is due both Steve and the English family for their decision-from model railroaders everywhere..

Although we distributed the Bowser and Cal Scale lines in another era, Model Railroad Warehouse has determined that we will not continue distribution of the Stewart products. This is not a reflection of our regard for the Stewart line nor the Bowser organization.  We have the highest regard for both. It is a business decision based on the recognition that our time and resources need to better focus on our own product lines and on the changing climate in the past few months of the model railroad business.

Effective this date we are canceling back orders for new Stewart product. As the dust settles we will post a closeout inventory listing here on the Stewart page of our website. It will include a large number of long out-of-production items.   Our Stewart page will remain in place for reference purposes in the foreseeable future as a service to model railroaders. Barb-Our 800 order taking service is instructed not to accept Stewart orders until this closeout list has been prepared. Our shopping cart will be deleting all Stewart cataloging within a few days. Website orders cannot be accepted in the meantime.

RUMORS circulating from the internet that the "Holy Athearn War" is about to see the disappearance of Stewart into another major distributor's fold are, according to Steve, "rumors, what were we offered?" He expects to be at the Seattle National Train Show in case you have an offer he can't refuse. We'll bet that he does refuse it. Remember, this is the man who introduced the concept of "phase and detail specific variety in diesels" (even 1 vs 2 headlight F7 variations were unknown then) to HO a quarter century ago. "Product Idea" folks aren't the same culture as "fast buck marketing" folks

STEWART INFORMATION UPDATE-from MODEL RR WAREHOUSE

A WORD ABOUT STEWART AVAILABILITY AND PRICES Stewart Hobbies produces limited editions which usually are available for a few months. Some have recently sold out in weeks, however (2 or 3 in days). The very latest are listed on our ARRIVALS board (homepage) and our website catalog is frequently updated to reflect those we can actually supply. After they are unavailable from the factory we indicate that in the catalog and our price on remaining stock of those is full retail. While in production, the best Stewart prices are available from MRRW (see the shopping cart) and our dealers. A good many Stewart road names are now nearing "out of production" status and special clearance prices can be found in our shopping cart on these. Larger orders may receive better shipping rates [than the web shopping cart computer assigns] by using our 800 ordering

STEWART ANNOUNCES VO 660 at Ft Washington Show 3/22/03

From 1941 through mid 1946, Baldwin produced 130 of the distinctive VO 660 diesel switcher. Shorter than later Baldwins, this engine had a rectangular V shaped grill, and was produced with three detail variations (phases I, II, III) during the war period.

Stewart has announced production of all three phases with shipping of the three undecorated and the PRR models beginning as we post this notice. Twenty other roads will be shipped (starting in April) as painted by Stewart-in correct phases. As the number of units varied by road, Stewart will provide from one to six numbers per road (shown in parenthesis). Msrp is $120. Our website catalog will show the catalog, phase and road numbers. WARNING: Stewart states these will be in "extremely limited quantities."

Roads announced are: C&EI (1); C&NW (3); D&RGW (4); EJ&E (2); Jersey Central (4); KCS (1); L&N (4); LI black (1); MP (1); NC&StL (1); NP (2); NYC (5); PRR (6); RDG (4); SLSF (2); SOU (1); SP (2); TRRA (2); WABASH (1); WM (4)

If you were wondering how to weight the new Stewart G39 ore cars, wonder no more. They are die cast with plastic liner.

MRRW dealers enjoy the industry's best pricing on Stewart. If your dealer doesn't stock, we welcome your order. Web catalog orders are charged by the computer when ordered, but your 1-800-672-8762 orders (8-5. M-F EST/CDT) will only be charged our web catalog price + shipping when actually shipped.

ABOUT STEWART

We've been first name friends for a long time. Steve Stewart and his late wife Terry pioneered concepts taken for granted today. Their RS3 locos had detail specific variations for the roads offered and their F3 and F7 offerings introduced the same concepts when modelers were accustomed to "vanilla generic" F units in a limited variety of paint schemes. ( We were the aftermarket decorators who added lower volume paint schemes before Stewart developed this capacity) .Today road specific details and a variety of paint schemes are taken for granted. Stewart continually upgraded their drive to be the best available at popular prices. Sometimes this made their (made in USA) locos seem more expensive than imports-then the importer's "second releases" zoomed past the Stewart's stable price line. Replacement parts? Certainly, they continue to be available for most mechanical components. Mrs. Stewart researched the CORRECT paint schemes so thoroughly that there were sometimes complaints they were wrong-because they were different from those of importers or because different loco models actually had different shades of gold when released etc. Perhaps we are kindred spirits because we too do original research and have new ideas then get copied so often. Perhaps it is because we too believe limited editions must be available for reasonable times if possible. Or perhaps because we too believe in continually fair prices because we too are modelers first, businessmen second. Your suppliers who think that way don't stick you with the bill for large, glitzy color ads, just for solidly designed products which give us a car payment, supper on the table and money to start the next set of kilobuck molds. STEWART HOBBIES products have been distributed by MRRW since their earliest days-when SEVERAL variations of the RS3 and F3 locomotives were offered and our "New River Models" was their "official" aftermarket decorator.

Stewart continues to offer the greatest variety of prototype specific detailed styrene locomotives and hopper cars available today. Except the Baldwin yard switchers (made in Korea) they are produced in USA. Featuring the finest DCC ready mechanisms and consistent prices. The factory decorated editions are limited and many have recently sold out quickly upon release. We encourage you to reserve with us The deposit requested for advanced reservations is EQUAL the amount your purchase will be discounted upon arrival when the balance and shipping are due. If your dealer carries Stewart, tell him MRRW gives the best dealer terms in the industry. It should be worth your mentioning.

MOST DISTRIBUTORS TODAY ORDER STEWART (and other limited items) ONCE. When their initial order is exhausted (quickly they hope) they consider the item UNAVAILABLE and move their attention, shelf space and capital to the next ad blitz release. As a result, many dealers do the same-it is the easy way (and they don't want to get "stuck" with items on their shelves after the hype is all over). MRRW reorders frequently from Stewart and we continue to BOTH maintain a broad inventory (you'll note we list many OOP items WE have yet, when Stewart is sold out-they routinely refer customers to us) and an updated knowledge of ACTUAL factory availability. It is not unusual for other sources to advise unavailability of items which ARE VERY AVAILABLE from MRRW and often the factory too...

MRRW STABLE STOCKING POLICY Stewart is in stock or in transit to promptly fill your needs. Check our website shopping cart catalog for the latest updated availability. Our ARRIVALS board advises when STEWART items REALLY DO become available and our shopping cart is frequently updated to advise when they REALLY DO become unavailable. Early release single hoppers cannot be efficiently listed in our catalog, but you may email regarding them stewartparts  at  mrrwarehouse.com

SEEKING OR SELLING UNAVAILABLE STEWART? Your FREE classified ads will be posted in our YARDSALE page effective in January 2003. See details there.

For your reference, we present illustrations here of a representative item from each locomotive and hopper car class. Because of the constantly changing variety of road names and paint schemes, our website catalog cannot illustrate each of the 200-250 current production items (available in a given week). We also list various out of production items still available in limited quantities from our stock. Except the Baldwin yard switchers, we also carry a wide selection of Stewart paers, shells and chassis. Please email us regarding your needs in parts (no decorated shells are offered by Stewart) as we cannot efficiently list them in our catalog stewartparts  at  mrrwarehouse.com
