Q and A

Yes Red Ball will consider other prototypes if resources are made available--like plans and photos. We have listed MANY roads already in our lineup.

Yes Red Ball will sell bulk lots to dealers or societies to paint and letter exclusive products. Our regular production will be unpainted. Bulk orders should be placed BEFORE release.

Yes Red Ball bodies will be injection molded in red styrene and easily assembled. Detail parts will be cast in styrene or metal as appropriate and etched in brass. The kits  will be highly detailed and designed so you can add trucks and detail the interior as you wish.

Yes  The new Red Ball kits are prototype specific, crisply detailed and we still have a pricing goal of under $30 a kit despite the long engineering effort and escalating styrene, shipping and molding energy  prices.

No, Red Ball  kits will not remain in open stock. They will be limited editions. We may rerun some models in time but our plan is to bring a constant stream of new kits.  That will not allow keeping the old ones in stock for long periods.  We will plan on 6 to 15 month availability periods.

No, Red Ball will not intentionally produce cars that someone else offers. Should our tooling already be in progress when a group makes resin kits or an importer runs to China we will not abandon the kilobuck investment we have already made.  It is no secret what we have scheduled. Special road societies interested in promoting their road with economical kits for general availability should avoid "creaming" the market for their road with dozens or a few hundred resin kits. We are planning on roads for which mass producers would not turn off their alarm clocks but we must recognize over a thousand kits sold to justify mold making and design costs.

Yes The Red Ball B&O cabooses will allow variation in prototypical platform and step designs to be modeled. The first kits will be 4 window sides.  Later reruns are expected to have window variations.  No two of the prototypes we have studied are identical you know.

ADDITIONAL CABOOSES FROM AT&SF, B&O, NYC, MC, NP, B&A, Frisco, Southern, CPR are under active study. Availability of good plans (diagrams are usually insufficient) and photos from modelers has added to our list-and we are most willing to consider additional models.

PROTOTYPICALLY CORRECT HO CABOOSE S
copyright by Model Railroad Warehouse

MASS PRODUCED CABOOSE CARS NORMALLY APPEAR IN MANY PAINT SCHEMES, BUT ARE ONLY CORRECT FOR ONE OR A HANDFUL OF RAILROADS. In the late years of caboose production, a few rather standardized designs emerged which may be properly lettered for several roads, perhaps with a slight discrepancy of a window or other detail. Earlier caboose cars, however, were generally unique to the originating railroad. Athearn's cupola caboose, for instance, is a Santa Fe prototype. A nearly identical car (one window needs blanking) was also run by the Wabash (and later the N&W). By judicious substitution of a Tyco streamlined cupola, the car could be transformed into a second Wabash car. The Walthers bay window caboose is correct for NYC and the Varney steel bay window car closely resembled a B&O car/. Other out- of- production brands are sought by specific road modellers. Roundhouse's variety of cars typically have a prototype as well. Pennsy modellers have been blessed by a variety of correct cars from Bowser. Limited hand poured "exclusive" cars appear from time to time, but specific prototype cars generally seem elusive for hobby shops. Model Railroad Warehouse specializes in road specific prototype kits by a variety of manufacturers which are available through better train shops or direct if you have no stocking MRRW dealer Some kits listed are announced TBA indicating they are nearing release but are not available at this time:

Well, we are still holding our tongue about the exciting pending release of our new styrene series of Redball Cabooses.

Watch here for the absolute first word on these exciting kits!

Troop Sleeper cars were converted to cabooses on several railroads, the Bangor and Aroostook
being best known. There is more information on our TROOP CAR page.  Conversion kits of the
BAR and D&M cars have been tooled by Red Ball and are listed on the LTD Series page.
These kits will only be produced in small batches to fill advanced orders.
Here are a few BAR links of colorful BAR (no two alike) conversions.
