Bristol Series
Model Railroad Warehouse announces the Bristol Series structure kits in HO, N and O scale, Realistically printed on special heavy paperboard materials, these kits are quickly assembled using scissors & glue stick or rubber cement. Because of their reasonable price (most HO & N are under $10),the ease of construction and their level of realism, they are an ideal way to begin historic dioramas or realistic model railroad scenery, install in depth distance scenery or provide standing buildings. HO Bristol Series are designed for upgrading with fine Tichy/CMA and Grandt Line windows. Doors and details for foreground viewing or may be used as templates for scratch building projects-the modeler never needs to "outgrow them." The "footprint" for each is provided for those wishing to make foam-board bases.

Dealers will find the kit and building sheets' attractive packaging easy to display and sell on pegboard. The HO and most N products occupy 9x15 space in their poly bags with the kits pictured in color on the headers. O scale kit packages occupy 13 x 23 prox.

It takes just a few minutes to assemble Bristol Series kits. After studying the photograph of the actual model – and the exploded construction views, cut out all wall and roof panels with scissors.

Wherever bending is indicated, lay a straightedge along the bend line and scribe the exterior with a blunt table knife, (dry) fine tip ball point pen or other fine scribing tool. Use only glue stick or rubber cement to assemble. Artist's or model builder's sealant may be oversprayed and foam board interior walls and baseboard may be added when the model will be subjected to high humidity. The model's "footprint is indicated behind this flap for those preparing a baseboard.

#197-22011N   NKP FREIGHT HOUSE

A Bristol Series HO (1/87) kit requiring scissors, straight edge and glue stick or rubber cement to assemble  N-Scale $8.99

This authentic colored model is designed to allow super detailing using CMA/Tichy and Grandt Line quality molded styrene windows and doors later if desired.

"Board and Bat" construction was "typical railroad" and so was the freight house that could accommodate two boxcars and housed the agent's offices. The freight house will look right in any self respecting town.

#197-32001N SEWELL ENGINE HOUSE N SCALE $7.50

This authentic colored model is designed to allow super detailing using CMA/Tichy and Grandt Line quality molded styrene windows and doors later if desired.

The New River Gorge is a well known recreational area. The beauty of these West Virginia mountains was once the home of vast lumber operations and coal mines that fed coke to the steel mills of Pittsburgh. One of the many diminutive narrow gauge rail operations that carried these cargos off the mountaintops was the Mann's Creek Railroad. Few remnants of the operation remained long after its mid-century demise -- one was the stone Sewell Engine house.

In the "hill country" large barns are not commonplace because large grain fields just don't usually exist. If a farmer did not graze dairy cattle on the hillsides it was likely a smaller barn to house the working mules and horses would serve well. And this was "the style." Of course "{the Hill Country" was found in the Ozarks and farther west ==where this model will be right at home.

#197-41005N  DELTA SHARECROPPER'S SALTBOX  w/ Outhouse & board fence  N-Scale $5.00

A Bristol Series HO (1/87) kit requiring scissors, straight edge, knife and glue stick or rubber cement to assemble

THIS KIT IS DESIGNED TO PERMIT UPGRADING with Tichy/CMA and GRANFT LINE windows and doors for foreground models.. Unpainted wood for porch posts included

The saltbox style frame house was a simple favorite construction style during the 19th century. This "board ‘n bat" prototype happens to have been located in the southern Illinois delta area, but settlers called it home in many regions.

#197-43001N   The MAIL POUCH BARN and Silo  $7.00

This authentic colored model is designed to allow use in N gauge or for distance perspective. Larger barn doors (included) allow foreground use.  This kit requires the use of an empty cardboard tube from bathroom tissue-not included

HOMETOWN is licensed by the Whitehall Co to produce authentic Mail Pouch advertisements in miniature.

The BANK BARN was often built into a hillside-quite on purpose. Upper level entrance facilitated storage of feed, hay and straw in the main floor and overhead lofts. From here it could be dropped to the animal use areas in the lower level. The temperature in the animal housing level was moderated. By the embankment. In hot weather, the cantilevered overhang provided shade for animals outside near the barn. If embedded into a hillside, a foundation of local stone would be appropriate at and below ground level. HOMETOWN gas several types of stone sheet. These barns were often found in flat settings as well. Usually an earthen fill was built to the upper level doors, though a steeple sloped wood deck was also common to allow horses or tractors to pull wagons to the main floor.

If a farmer did not graze dairy cattle on the hillsides it was likely a smaller barn to house the working mules and horses would serve well. And this was "the style." Of course "{the Hill Country" was where roads were leading to Lookout Mountain and Rock City. The fellow who painted their rooftop billboards planned ahead-always spotting where he intended to land (and not) if the footing got too slippery.

#197-43010N N Scale Markle Mill $8.99

This kit requires the use of straight drinking straw or similar tubing, not included. It is designed to permit upgrading by use of Tichy/CMA or Grandt Line windows & doors and Campbell corrugated aluminum material.

Grain elevators were more common than barber shops in rural American towns of the "corn belt" Much that was grown was kept to feed livestock, so only that traveling to "the city" would be hauled here. Further west, in wheat country, much larger elevators were common but they dominated the country in this size too. This particular mill was one of two along the Erie RR in Markle, IN. Most such mills were built of wood and later covered with corrugated iron. Those still in use will typically have added additional storage bins and piping. These bins are usually cylindrical concrete silos or corrugated metal with conical roofs.

#197- 41010N MILLER'S SALTBOX  w/picket fence. Flowers on trellis, laindry $5.00

This kit is designed to permit upgrading by use of Tichy/CMA or Grandt Line windows and doors.

A nicely restored frame home, over a century old. It would be a nice home in many communities across the country and is still found in rural settings too.

NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Updated July 14, 2005

TICHY TRAIN GROUP
At the National Train Show last week Don showed off new molded styrene kits for a signal tower and a wood water tank.

We'll post pictures promptly and expect them in stock soon. Our National Train Show report shows Don Tichy holding these kits

RED BALL

We hinted to some N scalers at the National Train Show  they should check the website this week and here is the great news.  Prototype specific kits of N&W Caboose class CF; Virginian Caboose Class C1  and a B&O wood Caboose,  are scheduled for this fall/winter.  We could not announce these injection molded styrene kits until after meeting with our plastic molders this week. These will be injection molded styrene kits with etched brass details-at a reasonable price .

A big hit at the show-our first four sets of brass sides to convert the Micro Trains @ troop sleepers into railroad specific troop car conversions. Our sample sets sold out quickly.  Production sides will be available in August-September at $20 per set.

Get a look at the different HO cars on the TROOP CAR (click in menu over at the left) page. There's a lot of prototype info there too.  Every conversion was unique and they were common on passenger trains in the 1950-70s era. These unpainted sides are DOUBLE etch .010 brass and glue to the outside of the plastic cars after light sanding on their (plastic)sides.  Doors are included on inside door cars.

We also showed the Red Ball Mann's Creek Log Buggy. Parts are here to start packing these kits as quickly as the contractor finishes our new packaging building.  Our packaging facility burnt down April 15  delaying this kit. Pictures of the HO  and O car  appear on the Red Ball page.  This one will LOOK RIGHT behind your Shay or small steamer. The precut wood glues together in just a few minutes and the etched brass details are highly detailed. Link & pin couplers are included or you can attach a draft gear box..  These 22' jewels will look RIGHT on the standard OR narrow gauge trucks of your choice.

HOMETOWN  Bristol Backgrounders

Seen first at the National Train Show July 2005-these giant 17x21" sheets of full color, textured scale brick are made in 7 prototypical colors. They were so popular we sold nearly half of what was expected to be the "season's run" of these $5 sheets at the show!  There are also 2 colors of "Insulbrick" (that tar/asbestos sheeting that was used to cover old buildings-has black lines rather than mortar between "bricks") that many purchased to use as street paving.  A sample card of all the colors is sent  for $1.    Giant sheet of "corrugated iron" roof/siding is also available.

June 1, 2005

HOMETOWN has released a series of well detailed structures on HO, N and O sizes that have been finding favor with modelers who seek background models with character - but with reasonable cost and time requirements.  The 'Bristol Backgrounders have just taken on a new dimension with the release (during National Train Show at Cincinnati) of highly realistic 'Bristol Backgrounder Walls' in a large useful sheet size, at reasonable cost and in major scales from N to G. Priced at $5.00 each, the Bristol material has a printed area  of 11 x 17 inches with brick arranged  for either vertical (tall 'T') or horizontal (wide 'W') walls.  Seven prototypical brick colors are available with appropriate prototypical color variations and gray mortar. Two 'Insulbrick'  (an imitation asphalt brick siding with 'black mortar' lines) colors; Corrugated iron, Concrete block and two colors of 'random stone' are in the initial offerings of Hometown's .Bristol Backgrounders. The heavy Bristol walls may be bonded to foam poster boards to meet strength or humidity requirements..

Adding to the line's versatility are the large printed sheets with arrays of older factory windows topped with brick arches. The windows match various Tichy/CMA styles to allow use on structures where those windows are also desired.  'Curtin'  and 'Utility' style industrial walls round out Hometown's  new  Bristol Backgrounders released in July at the National Train Show in Cincinnati.

A sample card showing all the brick, Insulbrick and stone colors, as well as the various scale sizes, will be sent by Model Railroad Warehouse for a dollar. (Mail requests only, please, or with other orders).  The 11x17 sheets are shipped 'just rolled' in tubes  in US for $7 per order.  Foreign and flat mailing is more.

Bristol Backgrounder Walls: (all numbers have 197 prefix. Specify W or T where available as the last digit of number. Example: TALL Bright red brick HO sheet is #197-H90001T)  .
