WORLD WAR II TROOP CARS

FIFTY FOOT STEEL TROOP SLEEPER CARS AND TROOP KITCHEN CARS WERE BUILT BY THE THOUSANDS FROM 1943-45 FOR TROOP TRAIN SERVICE THIS PAGE OF THE MRRW WEBSITE HAS EXTENSIVE RESEARCH INFORMATION and pictures ABOUT THE CARS AND THEIR SUBSEQUENT SERVICE ON OVER 100 RAILROADS IN US, CANADA and MEXICO. At home running in crack passenger trains as REA reefers, heater cars or railroad express cars, serving as cabooses, transformed into a gigantic ALASKA RR freight fleet or simply in MofW service, troop cars were commonplace for over three decades of service and some were still found in company service into the 2000s!

ABOUT THE KITS:

The PRR converted 50' roundroof boxcars into troop cars. RED BALL introduces an HO kit in 2002 and BBGT offers brass partsets in S,O and N, as well as HO sides to convert Bowser boxcars.*

CANNONBALL CAR SHOPS offers a line styrene body kits in HO to build all phases of the ACF kitchen car and the PS sleeper cars. These products are in their fourth production run. A fifth is not scheduled. Car end upgrades are available for first and second run kits. Free decal certificates were only included in third run and must be redeemed while the kit is still in production. These kits include Eastern Car Works Allied Full Cushion truck frames that accept most 33" wheelsets. Handrails, grabs, stirrups and AB brake detail may be readily added by the modeler. Kits may be special ordered less truck frames for  less.

197-9708 & 9710 are kits 9702 and 9705 with non-working wheelsets and other details for sale as static models only in military museum gift shops. 9703 Express reefer is no longer available.
