TROOP SLEEPERS and TROOP KITCHEN CARS were designed for service on foreign fields, indeed their unique Allied Full Cushion trucks were designed for European clearances.  BUT, they apparently never went beyond North America. Cars were in North Africa and Europe service, but not THESE cars.

CALIFORNIA, Orange  Empire Railway Museum in Perris, CA. Located at the  museum are two kitchen cars for those who might be interested - 1953 St. Louis products. The numbers  listed are 89631 and 89647. Also,  a program the Air Force used that converted  sleepers or kitchen cars coupled to early  heavyweight passenger cars. Contained within the  two cars were a flight simulator for a KC-135  aircraft and support equipment. Each pair of cars  serviced three military bases, being moved every 30  days. Two "volunteers" got to ride with the cars  when they were transported between bases.  (Donald J Luke  oerm2133 at aol.com

Correct decals certificates are included with Cannonball kits 9702 and 9705 produced or upgraded since January 2001. CC0S will announce these decals as a cataloged item.

Military equipment diagram books show "guard cars" in postwar service which were converted  kitchen cars.   The reported existence of another generation of troop cars during the Korean War is not readily documented.  Pullman Standard Library Vol 18 (published by RPC) illustrates a ten car (40') hospital train built in 1943 and an 83' hospital car built in 1943 mentioning order cancellation and reorder in 1950s.  Many of this type car WERE built and later became Monon's "streamliners" and Ringling's circus cars.

The ubiquitous troop cars represented in Cannonball's kits replicate "standard" Pullman Standard 50' sleepers and ACF 50' kitchen cars  Most sources cite two styles of sleepers and one type of kitchen. Our research indicates THREE variations of sleeper sides (the "tabs" or "skirt"), two underframes  and two to four end variations. Kits 9701,2 and 7 will build any of these.  There are two distinct end variations in kitchen cars, kits 9704 and 9705 build either.    Military diagrams show lettering different from the photographs we located (and employed in decal design)

The Pennsylvania RR converted 50' roundroof boxcars to troop car service  (Red Ball has announced an HO kit of this car, not yet released) and X29 boxcar(s) to kitchen cars (no photos located).  These cars were employed as the prototype for Pullman Standard adaptation of freight car design, materials and Michigan City, In. assembly facilities to build 1200 cars in 1943 #7000-8199; 200  #8300-8499 and 1000 #9000-9999 in 1945. Similarly,   four hundred kitchen cars #K100- K499 were built at Chicago by ACF and 400 #K600-K999 at Berwick, Pa. Army rosters continued listing some kitchen cars at least through 1965. Gene Green, a troop car "fan" reported his last sighting of a military car was guard car DODX16 at Camp Navajo, AZ  2/14/97.

Military Photos are referenced elsewhere in our site, but those excellent ones in the ROCK ISLAND material may pass notice.

Following the war railroads eagerly purchased these cars for conversion to other uses.  Lines operating them as express cars are indexed by railroad in this site. Hundreds of other uses were found on roughly a hundred roads.  Our references of these in MofW are indexed  by regions and in  "special use" lists. for your use.  This compendium of information is updated as additional material is located  or contributed.

An extensive article with clear photos (inside and out) is published in RAILWAY PROTOTYPE CYCLOPEDIA #5 page 25. The "mysterious" HOSPITAL kitchen car situation is demystified (and photographed). Author Pat Wider refers to the PRR round roof troop cars but not as "the prototype" as others claim and he claims the PRR kitchen cars were also 50' round roof (some sources claim 40' X29 boxcars were used. Anyone seriously interested in the military troop cars will find this resource interesting and worthwhile. The sleeper stairwell and sunken floor are two areas addressed headon. When used with the Rock Island publication we find few unanswered questions (maybe there are some we don't know to ask). One which surfaced with the kitchen car instruction writing: were Chicago and Berwyk roof vents really different? Not being privy to the prints now available at the St Louis museum during that stage of kit development we worked from photos of conversions which gave the answer ass "yes." Speaking of drawings-- many photos and cars in Alaska indicate our roof vents (scaled from available drawings mid 1980s and photos) are too tall.  The Alaskan boxcar builders simply file them down a bit. New question: were all the roof vents alike?

Folks at the Alaska Museum of Transportation and Industry tell us that not only were troop sleepers made into their famous boxcars, but also into gondolas and at least one "high cube" boxcar where a car was "chopped" in height and another sleeper spliced on top. They claim that not a single troop car came to Alaska as a troop car. Instead, they were rebuilt by a firm in Chicago who was paid --in troop cars-- for their services.  In your next trip to Wasilla, check out their cars and artifacts.   Alaska RR had over a hundred refrigerator/heater cars.  Troop Kitchens were converted for this service.

We cannot document this, but since the Chicago Freight Car company leased the KCS reefer fleet (with CRDX reporting marks) and did Railway Express' rebuilding work (some REA cars carried CRDX reporting marks as well) the pierces of the puzzle appear rather obvious a half century later, don't you think?

Photos are available (JL) of Alaska camp cars, cabooses, power cars and tool car. You may link to photos posted on our website. (taken in April, 2000) taken/provided by Jeff Childs of Anchorage, showing three boxcar paint schemes.. Jeff says " Sorry I couldn't get any roof shots. Note 1560E still has its roof walk. 1580S & 10418 sport the two main schemes these cars carried. 10418 has the earlier scheme. When 1530S was converted into a storage shed for McKinley Tours they cut the door into the B end. The boxcars were all numbered in the 104XX series and most were renumbered to the 15XX A series when transferred to MOW service. P14 & P17 were troop sleepers converted to power cars with diesels, generators and fuel tanks inside to provide mid-train power on TOFC freights. They used to have mufflers & exhaust on roof." Jeff has also taken more detailed photos of these car's ends, lettering etc.

THE ALASKA RAILROAD HICUBES-- Patrick Durand wins the Wildest Troop Car award for this one. Proto photo Model Photo

In 1973 some tiered and retired 10000 Series boxcars (made from sleepers) were converted into HI CUBE BOXCARS! The top was torched off one car and the top PORTION (cut above former window line) of a second car was welded on top. Odds and ends of doors and ends were spliced to fabricate the required TALL parts.. Like the 10000 boxcars, these 8000 series casrs were seen in the lower 48 (and Canada) as they interchanged via barge between Whittier and Prince Rupert. BC. Surviving as of July 2001. car 8018 was in Engineering Dept storage serviced at the Anchorage shop complex. Car 8012 survives as a machine shop at a ship chancellery in Seward. Capacity went DOWN from 110,000 lb to 80,000 b asx the leight weight jumped from 52,000 to 57,800 lb. The herald is 8'4" diam. Veteran employees dreaded sending them to Whittier in winter "for fear they would blow over in the wind--and they did sometimes."

More ALASKA by Pat Durand.  PIC 1  PIC 2  PIC 3 (Pics by Pat Durand)  - Durand Family wrote: The Alaska Railroad built 30 Double Door box cars from troop car box cars. The two doors covered a single 13'8" opening on each side, which allowed fork lift loading of 4x8 foot pallets of sheet rock, plywood and other building materials. These were equipped with bettendorf trucks and used in interchange via barge service resulting in lots of rust weathering from salt spray. With so much of the car side removed, reinforcing was done with a 10' channel section welded to the bottom edge of the car between the bolsters. A unique car, If you find one anywhere in Alaska, please let me know. Pat Durand

EVEN More ALASKA by Pat Durand. PIC 1  PIC 2  PIC 3 (Pics by Pat Durand)    When the Alaska Railroad started interchange service via barge to the lower 48 the built several HyCube cars in the 1000 series. Number 1019 is now at the Museum of Alaska Transportation and industry. These cars started as two Troop Sleeper Box Cars. With the roof removed from one car, a roof section of the second car including everything from the top of the windows up was spliced on by the local welder. Roof walks and ladders were removed down to 4 rungs and brake wheel lowered as part of the project. Doors were welded up from the best remains of the old doors. Both 6' and 7' doors were used. Old time railroaders claimed, "Those things were only good for Ping-Pong balls and kotex, and we always feared they would blow over in Bear Valley enroute to Whittier, and they sometimes did."

The Algoma Central numbered a troop sleeper #305, painted it to match their maroon, installed a baggage door (link to sketch) and used it as a baggage car for the trains carrying fishermen and their gear to remote camping spots--and the like.  Note we didn't mention sheathing the windows like other roads did--because they didn't. The car is pictured on  p 162 of Dale Wilson's  THE ALGOMA CENTRAL RAILWAY STORY published  by Nickel Belt Rails.  On page 153 this book also shows a steam generator car.    (also JL).

The Baltimore and Ohio converted troop sleepers into (sheathed window) express cars with inside doors, car # 1700-1813 (link to sketch).  JL photos of tool cars and a wrecker crew car are also available.

Several examples of these cars appear in BALTIMORE & OHIO PASSENGER SERVICE volumes 1 & 2 by Stegmaier (publ by TLC).  The best are vol 1  P102, 104 and vol 12  P16 in color.  Careful analysis of the B/W vol 1 photos suggest different colors Likely blue and Pullman green). Color photos (including my own) are shaded, low ASA film and just plain tough to read on color or lettering. The C&O Society's  STEEL CABOOSES OF THE C&O has an excellent photo for modeling (but not painting). It claims C&O had ex- B&O cars though other sources suggest C&O received ex- B&O cars....  The inside doors are plain with a vertical seam at the center, easily modeled by pieces of plain styrene. Kit #9707 should be used.

Several ex-sleeper express car views in Pentrex video " B & O  ODYSSEY vol 1". One particularly clear and useful view about 44 minutes (first car of train saluting flag at half mast - JFK)

Cars 1700-1799 had 7' doors and were placed in service with Allied trucks in 1947. These were changed in 1957-58 to A3 Ride Control.  Modelers should add the notch in the center skirt for "phase 1."

In 1964 cars #1800-1813 with 6' doors were placed in service.  These cars, from the C&O, rode Commonwealth trucks.

trp13  BOSTON & MAIN            Picture 1     Picture 2                 Top of Page

In 1947 and ‘48, the Boston and Main converted troop SLEEPERS into some of the most unique headend cars -- four door express cars and RPO cars--  in addition to more conventional two door express cars.  The RPO were converted to four door express cars in 1955 for a total of four groups of cars.  Kit 9707 with sealed windows or 9702 with steps (apparently retained and modified) are the correct color for adaptation, though 9701 can also be used.  The Allied trucks were converted to Chrysler early in their careers (originally, supposedly, though extant photos show otherwise-- Allied trucks ran in  B&M service) on all but the outside door cars (1953) when they received  A3 trucks. These cars, #3225-3249 were equipped with a 7' outside door, and had the full "skirt" on the sides.

One of these cars (now MofW) riding Allied trucks and resplendent in new Guilford paint, was photographed in service July 2000.

The other classes require notching the kit's skirt for "phase 1"  :

#3180-3182 RPO had a 6'8" door and 2'10" door

#3260-3276 had two inside double doors  6'8"

#3277-3279 were similar to the previous group except the sheathed postal door &window

Bethlehem Car doors #96 are very similar to the inside doors on those two groups.

Baggage/Mail car Converted sleeper #3181 is shown in good B/W photo (taken 1954 in Boston) in Passenger Cars of New England vol 1 Boston & Maine by Liljestramd & Sweetland publ by Railroad Press Car has 15' mail section, rides on Chrysler trucks.

Photos are found in Boston & Main Historical Society  Modellers Notes No 22 July 1991, No 23 Dec '91.  Tool car photos are available (JL).

From June 1947, Burlington used 300 troop KITCHEN cars in headend service. They began service with the windows unsheathed, riding Allied trucks with a 4' inside door. Cars were numbered 8600-8899. Sheathing of windows continued through the early 1950s and photos show rooftop ventilation vents in place on many units.

Photos in Jan 1970 MODEL RAILROADER,

C&S #240-243  (7/55) and Ft Worth & Denver #109-110  (10/53) were ex-CB&Q cars [ FtW&D were 8707 and 8715]

CB&Q officially listed 291 cars still in service, still on Allied trucks 1/1/56.  243 had been overhauled in 1953-55.

With this number of express service cars, a variety of later applications can be expected. Sketches or pictures received will be posted. A tool car photo is available (JL) as are Burlington Northern tool car photos (JL).

The MONON is best known for buying hospital cars and converting them to "streamliners".  The Hoosier line also purchased Troop KITCHEN cars converting them into  Mail storage cars  #203-206 with  4' Inside doors.  These cars survived red and gold (IU cream and crimson) to be painted (PU) black and gold and both colors were on the property after passenger trains ceased.  I am studying my own photos because memory says there were more cars there than published/official sources claim.  A good photo is on p115 of Dolzal's MONON book.    One kitchen car was converted to a steam heater car. 6/94 MAINLINE MODELER (p25-29) has photos a detailed article on modifying a brass car.  We'd use kit #9704 for it--and the headend cars.

The Pere Marquette endowed the C&O with a large number of SL:EEPERS (kit 9701) which became  express cars, cabooses and a host of MofW camp cars.  A handful of KITCHEN cars (kit 9704) also were utilized.

The C&O Society's book STEEL CABOOSES OF THE C&O has a section portraying many of these and a quite informative discussion. Camp cars (Bunk Cars) # X866, X8550 are also found  in the 10/51 RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN p24 & 25 See also our file for B&O as there were exchanges between the roads Door placement is the prime clue of originating road..

In 1948 express cars #355-376, with 6' inside doors, were added to the roster.  These cars would carry the full skirt according to records.  Many camp cars, however, had tabs clear across the lower edge of the sides. By mid- 1950, Common wealthy BX trucks had replaced the Allieds.

Kit 9707 should be used for express cars.

Ex sleeper bunk cars X866, X855 are shown in RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN 10/51 P24, 25

In 1947 the Rock Island purchased 50 SLEEPERS which became express cars #4200-4249 riding on their Allied trucks as they entered service mid 1948.  Chrysler trucks were installed 1956-59,.  Six foot outside doors (Camel) were installed.

An official diagram is posted which specifies the door placement.  Kit #9707 (sheathed windows) should be used for these conversions (9701 will work, windows must be plugged).

ROCK ISLAND TECHNICAL SOCIETY 1991 DIGEST by Harper has extensive photos, color info, information including ex-KITCHEN (kit 9704) car conversions.

This authoritative article claims the cars were painted silver.  Some other sources refer to gray. Some photos in the Digest show dark colored cars.  Former rail workers in Chicago recall dark green cars they claim were RI.  The published photos do not have a metallic "shiny" appearance.  The RI art deco lettering appears on some while others have traditional railroad  lettering (serif).

Erie had no headend cars but did convert troop SLEEPERS (kit 9701) into MofW service

DL&W converted SLEEPERS into #2111-2121 express cars  and they survived to run as EL cars #89-99.  Equipped with 6' outside boxcar doors, they began service with Allied trucks which were changed to A3 by  1958.   EL had Mof W cars from sleepers.  DL&W bunk car #3638 is clearly shown p25 RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN  10/51.

Bunk car conversions: use  kit 9701; express car 9707.  Express cars need the apron notched to represent "phase 1".

Modeling sketches posted were developed from good photos in the EL COLOR GUIDE FRT & PASS CARS book pub by Morning Sun.  P.118-131. Photos of MofW cars at Huntington  (link in our site) by Merle Rice show an ex-kitchen car in EL colors, the wrap around of paint and lack of lettering.  On another day and another track, he caught the same (?) cars clearly shone with BRIGHT paint, not faded or weathered, but the ends were more shadowed.   Erie and EL camp car photos are available (JL).

Nickel Plate passenger trains to Chicago routinely carried DL&W baggage cars.  We have yet to locate a photo of a DL&W converted troop car in NKP service (they had none of their own) and would appreciate receiving any.  NKP fans are really after us on this!
